Ph.D. Thesis | 2014

Barcelona School of Architecture | Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

Title: Space and Empathy at I Tatti: The Conceptual Basis of Architecture Criticism after World War II

This thesis focuses on the origin and propagation of two of Geoffrey Scott’s key concepts, Space and Empathy, introduced by The Architecture of Humanism. Chapter one follows the Anglo-American development of Space in parallel with its growth in the German tradition. Chapter two focuses on the concept of Einfühlung (Empathy). It displays the influence of psychologist Theodor Lipps upon the intellectual group gathered around Bernard Berenson in the early 20th century. Chapter three is the provisional conclusion of the study. It focuses on the two decades immediately after World War II when the concepts of Space and Empathy joined those of Architectural Experience. A final epilogue includes Philip Thiel’s work to expand the interpretations given to these three concepts in the second half of the 20th century and to leave this research open for further conversation.

Advisor: Dr. José Ángel Sanz Esquide.

Honors: Summa Cum Laude.

A copy of this thesis is housed at The Berenson Library at Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies and at the Biblioteca del Progetto of La Triennale di Milano .

Architect

Collaboration as an architect at Estudio de Arquitectura Alberto Campo Baeza for four years, carrying out responsibilities from initial design to management on national and international projects.

Undergraduate Thesis | 2006

Valles School of Architecture | Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

Project: Center for Primary Education in Terrassa, Barcelona.

The Center references the creative work of architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Arne Jacobsen and Alberto Campo Baeza. It proposes a division of the site into two funcional areas: nourishment and physical activity versus classroom and book learning. The building isolates itself from the exterior to avoid disruption during the day. The exterior areas are each attributed their own character in order to create diverse exterior ambience through canopies, porches and shade. The interior centers around the focal point of the interior courtyard which is meant to introduce peace into the learning environment.

Advisor: Dr. Lluis Bravo Farré.

Honors: Diploma of Excellence for a Degree Project at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Second Prize in Dragados Degree Project Awards.
